Developed under the concept of creating more user-friendly large aperture zoom lenses, the new Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Sony FE offers just that. This lens features a compact and lightweight design while bringing the creative freedom of a large f/2.8 aperture to the discerning photographer. Its very short 0.85m (33.5 in) MOD (Minimum Object Distance) expands overall versatility. The 70-180MM F2.8 Di III VXD Sony FE sports the same 67mm filter threads as the rest of Tamron's "Dream Team" high-speed zoom lenses - a key advantage of this series is their portability and bright apertures. Currently, this series includes lenses such as the ultra-wide 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III VXD and the high-performance standard zoom 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD.

Designed for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, this lens provides users with complete portrait to telephoto lens range coverage, spaning a useful short-telephoto to mid-telephoto range. Its optical construction includes several special lens elements for overall superb imaging performance. Among them are, low dispersion and aspherical elements used to correct a variety of aberrations and a BBAR-G2 coating to reduce flare and ghosting for high contrast and colour accuracy expected of Tamron lenses.

The lens utilizes Tamron’s newly developed VXD (Voice coil eXtreme torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism, which delivers notably fast, accurate, and quiet focusing performance. Not only is the autofocus drive quieter and quicker than ever before, but full-time manual focus control is also available. Additionally, a floating system is used to achieve excellent optical performance at all shooting distances. By simultaneously operating two VXD units via electronic control, the system produces clear and sharp images of all objects near and far.

Other features that support a great shooting experience include Moisture-Resistant Construction for added weather protection and Fluorine Coating for easy maintenance - enabling shooting in most conditions and protection against fingerprints and smudging. In addition, the 70-180mm F/2.8 is fully compatible with various mirrorless camera-specific features including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF.

VXD Linear Motor Focus Mechanism | Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive

Tamron’s first-ever linear motor AF drive focus mechanism called VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) ensures stunningly fast and accurate auto-focusing. The floating system uses two high-speed, high-precision VXD units with advanced electronic control for fast and precise AF performance.

Advanced Optical Construction

Optically, the lens features 19 lens elements 14 groups, including 1 extra-low dispersion (XLD) element, 5 low dispersion (LD) elements, 1 glass-moulded aspherical (GM) element, and 2 “hybrid” aspherical elements. All of these, paired with the second generation Broad-Band Anti-Reflection coating, promise exceptional image quality from edge-to-edge at every focal length, even wide open.

Compact & Versatile

Tamron is calling this “the lightest and most compact f/2.8 telephoto zoom in its class” - and with its 180mm maximum focal length and its extending zoom mechanism, it offers just that. It uses the same 67mm front filter thread as the 17-28 and the 28-75, weighs in at just 810g, and measures just 149mm in length at the 70mm setting.

Moisture-resistant and 'smudge-proof'

Finally, as with the other lenses in the Di III lineup, the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 is moisture-resistant, features a fluorine coating on the front element to repel oil and water, and, since the lens does extend during operation, there’s also a zoom lock switch to keep it from expanding during transport.
