The Sony FX6 Cinema Camera offers versatile, cine-style imaging in a truly compact form.

With the ability to capture up to 15+ stops of dynamic range, Sony's S-Cinetone gamma for filmlike skin tones, and up to 10-bit, 4:2:2 XAVC-I recording, the FX6 is poised to both supplement your FX9 or VENICE capture and to nimbly take on documentary, gimbal, and drone shoots on its own. The FX6 camera combines a 4K full-frame Exmor R sensor with a BIONX XR engine for extremely sensitive capture in a range of settings using a base ISO of 800 as well as an ISO 12800 high-sensitivity mode for nuanced low-light scenes.

Weighing just under 907g, the FX6 body packs a full-frame sensor into a body comparable to the S35-sensor Sony FS5. It fits seamlessly into a pro-cine on-set workflow, but also offers several features that are a boon for a single-operator user. These include fast and accurate phase-detection autofocus with both Face Detection and real-time Eye autofocus, both auto and manual ND filter settings for quick exposure compensation, and a 3.5" LCD monitor that boasts timesaving touchscreen access to key menu settings and versatile positioning for comfortable operating.

Professional 4K Video from a Full-Frame 10.2 Megapixels CMOS Exmor R Sensor with 15+ stops DR

The full-frame, back-illuminated, 10.2-megapixel3 Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor of the Sony FX6 offers impressive light-gathering capability. Fast readout speeds and a dynamic range of 15+ stops deliver superb image quality with wide sensitivity and reduced noise.

The BIONZ XR image processing engine matches the sensor’s high-speed readout with enormous processing power. Built with a future-oriented architecture, it delivers high-quality images faster and dramatically improves camera interface responsiveness.

15+ Stops Dynamic Range
At its base sensitivity of ISO800, the FX6 offers optimal dynamic range for well-lit interiors and outdoor documentary shooting. An enhanced ISO 12800 sensitivity is designed for challenging low-light, morning and evening shots. The FX6 offers an exceptional 15+ stops of dynamic range ‒ beyond the perception of even the human eye in many conditions ‒ allowing for unprecedented creative freedom in colour grading and post-production.

Capture the impossible with expanded ISO sensitivity

Capture usable images in near-total darkness with an impressive ISO expanded range up to 409600. The full-frame sensor coupled with innovative light-gathering ensures limitless shooting possibilities.

Stunning bokeh and full-frame creativity

Realise beautiful 4K imagery with the creative freedom made possible by a full-frame sensor. Capture every detail from the scene with shallow depth of field and stunning bokeh for a truly cinematic look.

S-Cinetone | Cinematic colour science

S-Cinetone colour, developed for Sony’s acclaimed FX9, is the default look on the FX6. Precisely tuned to meet the requirements of today’s content creators with rich colour and natural skin tones, it produces fresh and vivid images straight out of camera without grading, while retaining plenty of latitude for post-production.

Achieve Critical Focus | Fast Hybrid AF System

The wide-area AF uses intelligent tracking and on-sensor phase-detection for tenacious subject tracking across almost the entire frame (627-point focal-plane phase-detection AF covers approx. 89% of the image area). The hybrid AF system delivers precise focusing even when shooting at shallow depths of field and at 120p high frame rates in 4K (QFHD).

You can set the target area among Flexible Spot, Zone, Wide and change the position of the target area quickly during shooting by simply touching the LCD monitor.

Selectable AF Transition Speed
With AF Transition Speed selectable over 7 levels, and AF Subject Shift Sensitivity over 5 levels, you can better convey your creative intentions when switching subjects or, for example, rack focusing.

Real-time Eye AF and Face Detection

Real-time Eye AF and Face Detection ensure accurate, stable focus acquisition for interviews, events, and anywhere where precise focus on people is essential. Sophisticated real-time processing realises pinpoint eye focus even when subjects are looking down or up at steep angles, allowing the operator to concentrate fully on composing the best shot.

AF Assist | Lens-ring AF subject selection

When the AF Assist function is ON, rotating the focus ring instantly switches from autofocus to manual focus so that a different subject can be quickly selected. Autofocus operation resumes as soon as the user stops rotating the lens focus ring.

Work Efficiently with a Lightweight, Modular and Dependable Ready-to-shoot Camera

Despite its amazingly light 0.89kg body, the magnesium-alloy FX6 is more than tough enough for the rigours of real-world shooting. A detachable Smart Grip puts key functions at your fingertips and is easily adjustable with a single button.

Ideal for low angle shooting, the smart handle is part of the FX6’s modular design. It’s easy to reconfigure for any application, including mounting in a gimbal, drone, or underwater housing.

Magnesium Body and Frame
To perform reliably in challenging environments, the main body, covers and top handle are made from a production-tested, lightweight magnesium alloy. The main frame achieves high strength and durability with minimum weight in order to maximise mobility.

Designed to Prevent Thermal Shut Down
The custom ventilation system and chassis design help to prevent the thermal shut down of shooting8 at high frame rates and 4K (QFHD) resolutions. The number of heat sinks, the shape of air intakes and exhaust vents as well as the location of the low-noise fan, and airflow paths have all been calculated with precision to ensure that optimum ventilation is achieved.

Built-in electronic Variable ND Filter

The FX6 features Sony’s unique built-in electronic Variable Neutral Density (ND) filter. Unlike conventional optical ND Filters, the electronic ND Filter on the FX6 can be controlled from 1/4ND to 1/128ND linearly, or set to auto. Ideal in changeable environments, there’s no need to change filters as lighting conditions change or to maintain your depth of field.

Internal 10-bit 4:2:2 recording

Record right on the camera with the amazing richness of 10-bit depth and 4:2:2 colour sampling, for far greater flexibility in image grading, post-processing and compositing.

16-bit RAW SDI output

For demanding post-production workflows, 16-bit RAW output is available via SDI connection to compatible external recorders while XAVC-I files are simultaneously captured in-camera. RAW video output is 4096x2160 or 3840x2160 data from the image sensor with a choice of 59.94 / 50 / 29.97 / 25 / 24 / 23.98 frame rates.

All-Intra encoding available
As well as Long GOP, internal All-Intra encoding is now provided. This encodes every frame independently at bitrates up to 600Mbps, to capture complex motion more accurately, and allow more efficient editing workflows.

Scene File function allows easy look changes on-site
Four preset scene file types are available for SDR shooting (S-Cinetone, Standard, Still, ITU709) and two for HDR (HLG Live, HLG Natural) plus 16 slots for imported user 3D LUTs for your preferred look without post-production.
