The LEICA Q2 - Monochrom is the only full frame compact camera on the market with a dedicated monochrome sensor.
With a newly developed 47.3 megapixel full frame monochrome sensor that captures both highly-detailed still pictures and 4K video at ISO sensitivities up to 100,000, a fast Leica Summilux 28 mm f/1.7 ASPH. prime lens, fast and precise autofocus plus OLED viewfinder technology, the new LEICA Q2 - Monochrom not only continues the performance features of the Q2, but also defines new quality standards in black and white photography.
The monochrome design of the camera features a new leather covering, matt black paint, gray and white engravings and MONOCHROM lettering on the top for an elegant and unobtrusive look. The red Leica logo was intentionally omitted on this camera. Like the Leica Q2 the Q2 Monochrom also comes with a protective sealing against dust and water spray conforming to the IP52 Standard.
Featuring a truly unique imaging system, the Q2 Monochrom incorporates a high-resolution 47.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor, which pairs with the Maestro II image processor to deliver a wide dynamic range with notable tonal rendering, as well as enhanced sensitivity to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. The sensor's design features an updated microlens array and omits an optical low-pass filter in order to achieve greater sharpness, resolution, and clarity. Additionally, differentiating itself from typical sensor designs, the Q2 Monochrom sensor omits a colour filter array (CFA), which offers the ability to solely record monochromatic imagery using only luminance values for enhanced clarity, depth, and resolution. By removing the CFA, this camera also achieves a higher sensitivity range of ISO 100-100,000 than the colour-enabled Q2 camera, along with reduced noise to suit working in difficult lighting conditions and a broad 13-stop dynamic range.
The Maestro II's processing capabilities also afford fast shooting performance, up to 10 fps at full-resolution with a mechanical shutter, along with an especially quick autofocus system. Stills can be recorded as 14-bit DNG files and JPEGs. The added resolution also enables unique digital zoom capabilities to simulate working with different focal length lenses: 30MP images can be created using a 35mm field of view, 15MP images with a 50mm field of view, and 7MP with a 75mm field of view.
Key to the popularity of the Q-series is the incorporation of a fixed Summilux 28mm f/1.7 wide-angle prime lens, ensuring exceptional imaging performance. Blending Leica's optical know-how with a design perfectly matched to the image sensor, this lens incorporates three aspherical elements to control distortion and spherical aberrations for sharp and accurate rendering.
The fast initial aperture of f/1.7 guarantees optimum picture quality in even the most difficult lighting situations - excelling in low-light conditions and offering improved control over depth of field. Extending its versatility, a dedicated macro focusing position can also be used for working with subjects as close as 17 cm away.
Additionally, with its digital zoom of up to 75mm, the Leica Q2 can make a perfect companion for street photography as well as shooting architecture, landscapes, and portraits. An optical image stabilization unit also helps to compensate for the effects of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting - highlighting the greatest possible creative freedom in composing exceptional black-and-white images.
The newly developed, high-resolution OLED viewfinder has a resolution of 3.68 megapixels. The high resolution provides an ideal view and live preview of your subject at all times, with improved image depth and higher contrast.
To ensure you never miss a treasured moment, the Leica Q2 boasts an autofocus system that sharply focuses on your subject in 0.15 seconds, the fastest in its class. With its high-speed burst shooting rate of an impressive 10 frames per second at the full resolution of 47.3 MP, the Leica Q2 is built to capture what you want, whenever you need.
The combination of the excellent Leica Summilux lens and the ability to capture video with 4K resolution unlocks new creative perspectives. For brilliant, true-to-life moving pictures, the new Leica Q2 offers a 4K video mode with 3840 x 2160 pixels and frame rates of 30 or 24 frames per second.
The new Leica Q2 is the only camera in its class to feature protective sealing against dust and water spray. This means that it can brave even the most unfavourable weather conditions without the need for any additional protective measures. Shoot anywhere at any time without second thoughts and concentrate fully on what really matters – getting the perfect picture.
The new Leica Q2 features energy-saving Bluetooth connectivity for fast, wireless connection. After setting it up for the first time, this connection is automatically saved and remains available when the camera is switched off and on again. In combination with the Leica FOTOS App, this makes it possible to quickly and easily share pictures with the whole world on social media at any time, change numerous camera settings from a smartphone, or even remotely control the shutter release of the Leica Q2.
