Featuring a redeveloped imaging feature-set, the GR III Street Edition incorporates a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and GR Engine 6 to realize smooth tonality, rich colour and high sensitivity from ISO 100-102400, along with the ability to produce high-resolution 14-bit DNG stills or Full HD video.
Complementing the sensor design is an updated 28mm-equivalent prime lens, which features a bright f/2.8 design, to suit everyday shooting with a comfortably wide field of view. Additionally, a first for GR, a 3-axis Shake Reduction System compensates for the effects of camera shake to help render sharper handheld shots when working with slower shutter speeds.
The body size of the Ricoh GR III Street Edition is about the same as the GR DIGITAL IV (model with a 1/1.7 type image sensor) while delivering a completely new dimension of performance for the GR series. Controls are improved while maintaining the pursuit of portability, bringing us one step closer to the ultimate snapshooter. The camera is equipped with a 3.0" 1.037m-dot LCD monitor that supports touch operations and a convenient control dial. These features provide quick control over AF frame movement and menu access. Additionally, built-in Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi can be used to pair with a mobile device for quick, wireless transferring of files to your smartphone or tablet.
In addition to the cosmetic differences, the GR III Street Edition also includes a Full Press Snap feature, which lets you instantly shift the focus point of the lens to a preselected position when the shutter release button is fully pressed. This function can also be assigned to the rear LCD, where you simply tap the touchscreen to quickly change focus, and ignore the standard AF process, to help intuitively capture fleeting moments.
The GR III keeps evolving with the latest firmware updates. The expanded functionality firmware is provided to add new features and setting operations.
Flexible customization
Frequently used functions can be assigned to the ADJ lever and Fn button. Other controls can also be customized for fine-tuning camera operation, making the camera easier to use and to match your shooting style.
Image Control & JPEG image adjustment
The GR III features many selections of advanced image creation functions. Image adjustment parameters have been redesigned to 10 Image Control options for shooting. During playback, image tones of JPEG can be adjusted and saved as a new file.
The Ricoh GR III Street Edition is equipped with a high-resolution, wide dynamic range APS-C size CMOS image sensor (approx. 24.24 effective megapixels). It has approximately 1.5 times the pixels of the GR II and an anti-aliasing filterless construction that utilizes the characteristics of the high-resolution lens for high-definition detail reproduction. Both the image sensor and lens are also optimized for the best possible image quality.
Image plane phase-matching AF delivers high-speed AF and contrast-detection AF offers superb focusing precision. The best of these two types are combined to make a hybrid AF. The common issue of searching for focus peaks in contrast-detection AF has been significantly reduced on the GR III. The hybrid system delivers faster autofocus and greater precision.
The GR III uses sensor-shift type Shake Reduction mechanism delivering effective compensation on three axes.
AA Filter Simulator For Reducing False Colours and Moiré
Thanks to the built-in SR system, by using the microscopic vibration of the image sensor unit during image exposure, generates the same level of moiré-reduction effect as optical AA (anti-aliasing) filter. Unlike fixed optical AA filters which always creates an identical result, this innovative simulator allows the user to adjust the level of the moiré-reduction effect from OFF, Type1 and Type2. Bracketing of all those settings is also possible.
The GR III Street Edition is equipped with a new GR lens that surpasses all other GR lenses with its amazing optical performance. This lens uses a slim optical system with six elements in four groups while maintaining the 18.3 mm (35 mm format equivalent: 28 mm) focal length and brightness of F2.8.
High-refractive index, low dispersion glass and aspherical high-precision moulded glass lenses have been optimally placed in the lens construction to suppress distortion and chromatic aberration to the absolute limit, delivering a high level of sharpness. This results in images that are sharp and clear across the entire frame even from the widest aperture setting. An internal two stop-effective (ND 0.6) filter is also available for either slowing the shutter speed or permitting working with a wider aperture setting, and the lens has a nine-blade diaphragm to contribute to a smooth bokeh quality.
