The Sony FS5 Mark II is a compact professional video camera designed to be incredibly customisable and lightweight. The grip, LCD monitor and handle can be removed from the camera so it can be mounted in a variety of different ways and it features a Sony E Lens Mount with an electronic variable ND filter. It is perfect for filmmakers, and other professionals that require cutting-edge video quality without sacrificing shooting flexibility.

Super 35mm Sensor

Using a Exmor Sensor with 11.6-megapixels, the FS5 delivers high resolution 4K footage with a beautifully shallow depth of field in a range of challenging lighting conditions. The camera also supports HLG for fast HDR workflows that ensures you can squeeze the best performance out of the sensor.

14 Stops of Dynamic Range

One of the best features of the Super 35mm sensor is the impressive 14 stops of exposure latitude that allows you to record high contrast scenes without blowing out the highlights or crushing the shadows. This makes it useful for run-and-gun shooting when you don’t have complete control over the lighting conditions.

Professional Video Quality

The sensor’s readout speed makes it possible to capture 8-bit 4K footage internally at an impressive bit-rate of 100Mbps using Sony’s XAVC (Long GOP) codec with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. Higher quality 10-bit recording is possible at 4:2:2 when shooting in Full HD with a bit-rate of 50Mbps giving you significantly more colour depth for grading and chroma key work.

Slow Motion HD Video

Continuous High Frame Rate (HFR) recording is possible in Full HD resolution at up to 120fps as well as 8-second bursts of ultra-slow 240fps footage that allow you to turn fast paced action-packed moments into dreamy slow-motion shots. Adding an external recorder unlocks even more slow-motion functionality, but we’ll get to that in a bit.

Interchangeable Sony E-Mount Lens System

Complementing the modular design of the FS5 Mk II body is an interchangeable lens system that allows you to attach any Sony E Mount lens for shooting flexibility. The mount takes cinema and SLR lenses using third party adapters and is also compatible with Sony A-Mount lenses when combined with the Sony adapters.

Integrated Electronic Variable ND Filter

The camera has a built-in electronic Variable Neutral Density (ND) filter that can decrease the exposure of a scene without affecting depth of field. The electronic variable ND filter system is unique because it can be adjusted gradually rather than in hard stops by applying different voltages to a liquid crystal layer mixed with a light absorbing material that blocks light transmission.

New Colour Science

The FS5 M2 incorporates a new colour profile from Sony’s high-end Venice cameras that produces more natural skin tones. The new colour science captures faithful colours while retaining plenty of flexibility for grading in post. Additional picture profiles specifically designed for S-Log2 and S-Log3 are available, as well as a profile tuned to provide vibrant, high contrast visuals for a DSLR-style look.

Clear Image Zoom and Centre Scan Technology

The video camera can offer a substantial zoom increase up to 40x using Sony’s Clear Image Zoom Technology that doubles the zoom range and uses sophisticated pixel interpolation technology to ensure image quality is retained. The camera also supports Super 16mm cinema lenses with its Centre Scan Mode which imitates Super 16mm film cameras without vignetting.

Lightweight Modular Body Design

Weighing an incredibly lightweight 830g the body of the FS5 II is designed to be completely modular, with the ability to add or remove components depending on your needs. The rotating handgrip as well as the LCD monitor and the carrying handle are all removable, allowing you to strip the kit down if required. With 1/4-inch threads on the top, side, and bottom as well as a 3/8-inch tripod thread the camera can be easily mounted on drones, gimbals or even in underwater housings.

Rotatable Hand Grip

As well as being removable the hand grip is also rotatable with the flick on a button so you can control the camera from both high and low angles with ease. The grip also features a zoom rocker, joystick for menu operation, customisable function button as well as a focus magnifier to ensure you have complete camera control.

Dual SD Card Slots

To extend your shooting time and enhance your workflow the Sony FS5II has dual SD card slots that support SDHC, SHXC and can take Sony Pro Duo Memory Sticks. The RELAY mode uses the second slot as an automatic overflow for when the card in the first slot is full and the SIMUL mode records onto both cards simultaneously for an instant backup.

3.5-Inch LCD Monitor and OLED Viewfinder

With the top handle attached to the camera there are 9 different mounting positions to attach the 3.5-inch LCD monitor to, allowing you to set it up exactly how you want. In addition, the camera has a built-in OLED 1440K dot viewfinder, allowing you to shoot with a stripped down portable setup that can be used even in bright ambient light conditions.

Impressive External Output

Adding an external recorder like the Atomos Shogun or similar allows you to capture RAW 4K video footage at a higher DCI (4096x2160) resolution with frame rates up to 60fps as well as 4 second bursts of 4K footage at 120fps. This combined with the ability to output continuous frame rates of 240fps in 2K make the FS5 an excellent choice of slow-motion capture.

Optimised Connectivity

With a dedicated wired LAN port at the rear of the FS5 you can live stream any event, sending a live video feed to a client or media outlet via high speed FTP transfer without compromising on quality.

Wi-Fi and NFC Function

The camcorder features built-in Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity for steaming as well as remote control from your mobile device. This enables you to get the perfect composition and start/stop recording without needing to stand next to your rig.

Expandable Multi-Interface Hot Shoe

Boasting extensive expandability, the video camera has a Multi-Interface Hot Shoe that is able to power and act as an audio input with Sony’s range of wireless audio systems. The hot shoe can also control Sony’s LED lighting system as well as a range of other Sony accessories.
