Employing the latest in NIKKOR technology, the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR is crafted with two fluorite lens elements combined with magnesium alloy in the lens barrel, allowing for superior durability and significant weight reduction resulting in the world’s lightest*1 500mm*2 f/4 super-telephoto lens at approximately 3090g. This significantly lighter body is built to provide the familiar optical perfection you’re accustomed to, while having to carry less as your exploits take you further around the world.
A Nano Crystal Coat, which features nano-sized crystal particles that effectively reduces flares and ghosting, works in tandem with two fluorite lens elements and Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements. These refined optics are designed to improve lens light flow and minimise chromatic aberration for impeccable sharpness and enhanced colour correction, all of which saves you time and effort by reducing the hassle of unnecessary post-processing corrections.
The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR boasts a Vibration Reduction (VR) system that delivers an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops*3 faster in NORMAL mode. In SPORT mode, the VR system is ideal for capturing high-speed subjects, which provides improved viewfinder stability and enhanced blur-reduction capabilities, ensuring sharper, faster and more precise telephoto images in any situation.
Never lose track of your subject, even during high-speed continuous shooting, with remarkable autofocus (AF) tracking and stable auto-exposure (AE) control through the adoption of an electromagnetic aperture mechanism. This mechanism comprises of an aperture blade unit with drive mechanism that is controlled via electric signals from the camera body, allowing for improved long-distance accuracy during high-speed continuous shooting of fast and erratic moving subjects.
Engineered with the harshest of shooting environments in mind, a fluorine coat that effectively repels dust, water droplets, grease or dirt for easy cleaning is applied to the lens front. Weight is approx. 3,090 g, lighter than the current AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4G ED VR by approx. 790 g, with a length shorter by approx. 4 mm. This facilitates composition change even for quickly moving subjects and enables easy transportation. Magnesium alloy adopted for the lens barrel also contributes to durability and light weight.
Employs two fluorite lens elements and three ED glass elements plus Nano Crystal Coat to achieve high optical performance with minimized chromatic aberration and ghost effect.
Image blur caused by camera shake is effectively reduced by the built-in Vibration Reduction function. In the evolved NORMAL mode, when the camera is set on, a half-press of the shutter-release button instantly activates the VR function for improved blur-reduction effect.

VR performance immediately after the power is turned on with the VR mode set to NORMAL has been improved, providing a more stable viewfinder image and enhanced blur-reduction effect on the resulting images.
SPORT mode is especially effective when shooting sports, for example, in which subjects are radically moving. This mode has also been enhanced so that a more stable image can be viewed even when tracking a moving subject.
AF tracking performance has been significantly improved for the shooting of subjects with unpredictable movement, such as those slightly moving, moving at random speeds or approaching the camera at high speed.
A diaphragm blade unit with drive mechanism is incorporated in the lens barrel, enabling diaphragm control via electric signals from the camera body. This ensures stable AE control even during high-speed continuous shooting.
Fluorine coat is applied to a meniscus protective glass at the lens front. While inheriting the durability and high weather-resistance performance of the current lens, this coating effectively repels dust, water droplets, grease or dirt for easy removal even if they adhere to the lens surface, making the lens applicable to any shooting environments as well as facilitating lens care.
Lightweight and durable tripod collar ring incorporating bearings facilitates switching between horizontal and vertical orientation even for moving subjects, while ensuring improved durability.
