With an unprecedented ultra-wide 20mm to short-telephoto 70mm zoom range, this versatile lens is an excellent choice for a wide variety of movie and still subjects, from expansive landscapes to intimate portraits. the ultra-wide 20mm end of the zoom range makes it possible to maintain a wide angle of view even when shooting movies with a 16:9 or 2.35:1 aspect ratio that would normally reduce view angle.
F4 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range
A constant F4 maximum aperture provides extra versatility for choosing an aperture that best suits your intent at any focal length from 20mm to 70mm. The selected aperture remains constant throughout the whole zoom range. There is no need to use extreme ISO settings at the telephoto end of the range, and high shutter speeds can be used as needed to achieve the desired effect.

A compact lens with G Lens high resolution
The latest lens design technology makes imitable G Lens image quality available in a surprisingly compact, lightweight lens. With two AA (advanced aspherical) elements, one aspherical element, three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements, and one ED aspherical element, this lens' state-of-the-art optical design corrects chromatic and spherical aberration for extremely high optical performance right out to the image edges. Optimized coatings add high flare and ghost resistance to this superior optical design, for extraordinary contrast and clarity.
Beautiful BokehThe deep soft bokeh available with full-frame image sensors is further enhanced by a 9-blade circular aperture and optimally tuned spherical aberration.
Excellent close-up performance thanks to an innovative optical design incorporating Sony's high-precision AA (advanced aspherical) elements, the minimum focusing distance is only 0.3 meters at the wide end and 0.25 meters at the telephoto end of the zoom range when using AF or 0.25 meters constant when using manual focus. A maximum magnification of 0.39x makes for dynamic close-up images and the short minimum focus distance makes it easy to maneuver around subjects like small flowers.

Refined movie performance
Advanced technology reduces focus breathing as well as focus and axial shift when zooming so that distracting image shifts are minimized. This lens has also been carefully designed for quiet operation when shooting movies, with the advanced XD linear motors and a newly developed aperture unit dramatically reducing noise and vibration. The breathing compensation function provided in compatible α series cameras is also supported.

The lens's focus group is driven by two of Sony's latest XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors, providing high thrust for a fast, quiet and low-vibration focus drive. Thrust efficiency has been significantly improved compared to previous models with an approximately 60& increase in AF speed. Moving subjects are tracked with consistent reliable precision with 2 times improved tracking performance.
Active Mode image stabilization support for ultra-wide images and movies
α series camera's Active Mode image stabilization is highly effective at the ultra-wide end of this lens, providing excellent image stabilization performance while maintaining a wide angle of view. This can be particularly useful for shooting smooth handheld footage while walking.
Upgraded high-performance AF for movies
The Sony FE 20-70mm f4 G lens works with α series cameras to let you easily acquire accurate focus and smoothly track fast-moving subjects thanks to the two XD Linear AF Motors so you can leave focusing to the camera when shooting solo.
Linear Response MF support
Linear Responsive MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and in a linear fashion for subtle control when focussing manually. Focus ring rotation directly translates to a corresponding change in focus for precise rack focus effects and a great control feel. This feature also works effectively in combination with the AF Assist functions in cameras such as the a7 IV and FX6 to give you enhanced artistic control.
Aperture ring with click ON/OFF switch
An independent aperture ring offers direct and intuitive aperture control while the click ON/OFF switch allows the aperture click stops to be turned off for smooth and seamless aperture changes while recording.
