The Sony 14mm F1.8 Ultra-Wide GM Lens is a fast, versatile lens well-suited to landscape, nature, architectural, and astrophotography applications. Its extremely wide-but-usable perspective is complemented by the f/1.8 maximum aperture for excellent performance in low-light conditions and increased control over depth of field.
The optical design incorporates two extra-low dispersion elements and one super ED element to reduce chromatic aberrations, plus two XA (extreme aspherical) elements that significantly control spherical aberrations for a high degree of image sharpness and clarity. A Nano AR II coating has been applied to limit ghosting and lens flare for increased contrast and colour fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
An XD Linear Motor system uses two separate motors to provide quick and quiet focus, and also lends more responsive control for manual focus operation. A minimum focus of just 25cm and an ultra-wide field of view opens a new world of deep perspective close-up photography. Also, the lens features a dust- and moisture-sealed design and fluorine-coated outer elements to support shooting in inclement conditions.
Every component of the 14mm F1.8 G Master is designed to ensure maximum results in a remarkably compact and lightweight lens. The three aspherical lenses, two compact XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear AF Motors, maximising the benefits of the short mirrorless flange back distance, all contributed to achieving the ultrawide large-aperture performance with no compromises. This increased mobility makes the 14mm ideal for outdoor shooting and movie shooting using a gimbal. With an incredible minimum focus distance of 0.25m, combining this with the unique ultra-wide 14mm angle offers expanded possibilities for close-up stills or movie shooting.
Two XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motors are optimized specifically for the 14mm F1.8 G Master to provide the thrust efficiency required to precisely position the lens’s large focus groups, while maintaining near-silent operational noise.
The lens’s advanced mechanical system enables smooth and quiet focus transitions with minimal vibrations, especially crucial when filming video content. Additionally, the 14mm GM also supports Linear Response Manual Focus which delivers incredible precision when performing repeatable movements in Manual Focus.
Maintaining the G Master standard of lens design and reliability, the 14mm F1.8 G Master is constructed from a combination of metal and engineering plastic for high durability and low weight. At 460 grams and measuring under 10 centimeters, the lens is built to travel easily and balance perfectly onto a gimbal unit. Additionally, the 14mm F1.8 has fluorine coating on the front element which helps to prevent fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other contaminants, and built with a dust and moisture resistant design for extra protection and reliable operation.
