The EdgeHD is an aplanatic, flat-field Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, expertly engineered to generate distortion-free visuals across a broad visual and photographic field of view. Its sophisticated optical system minimises off-axis star coma, simultaneously offering an astrograph-quality flat focal plane that maintains its sharpness right to the periphery of the field of view.

True Astrograph Quality

Unlike optical designs that produce pinpoint stars across a curved focal plane, EdgeHD optics deliver a significantly flatter focal plane that is better suited to digital camera sensors. The focal plane is more than three times flatter than a standard Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and substantially flatter than competing coma-free designs, helping produce visibly sharp stars across some of the largest CCD sensors available. This design also improves edge performance, creating rounder stars whilst enhancing resolution and limiting magnitude compared with telescopes of equal aperture.

Celestron's StarBright XLT optical coatings are applied to every optical surface to maximise light transmission across a broad visual and photographic spectrum. Combined with the EdgeHD optical design, these coatings provide excellent light throughput and help deliver detailed, high-quality views for both visual observation and astrophotography.

Advanced Mechanical Features

The telescope tube incorporates several features designed to maximise optical performance. Flexible mirror clutches help hold the mirror securely in place and reduce image shift during long-exposure astrophotography, whilst rear-cell cooling vents allow hot air to escape from behind the primary mirror through integrated 50-mesh filters that help keep dust out. EdgeHD tubes also offer Fastar compatibility, allowing the secondary mirror to be replaced with a compatible third-party lens accessory for ultra-fast f/2 wide-field imaging. The system can operate at its native f/10 focal ratio, use an optional reducer for a wider field of view, or pair with a Barlow lens for high-resolution planetary, lunar and solar imaging.
